Label TextThis is a salt dip or cellar, an article of tableware for holding and dispensing salt. Salt cellars are known to have been used as early as in ancient Rome and continued to be used through the first half of the 20th century. Before the introduction of free-flowing salt in 1911, salt cellars were the best way to dispense salt. With the addtion of anti-caking agents in salt, however, salt shakers began to salt cellars.
