Shoes like this pair, with straps buttoned across the vamp, first became popular in the Edwardian era (1901-1914) and have stayed trendy in the decades since. These shoes typically had a sturdy block heel or a curved Louis heel, named after King Louis XIV, with a flared base. Around 50 years later, these strap pumps started being called "Mary Janes", a name we still use today.
