Label TextMany farmers around London would have used a flail like this to thresh their grain in the early 19th century. Farmers initially produced wheat for local markets. With the arrival of the railroad in 1853, they increased production for a wider market. The outbreak of the Crimean War (1853-1856) helped farmers, too. They shipped grain to Britain to supply its war effort.
