The CFPU was founded in 1941 to document military operations during the Second World War. It was the last unit of its kind to be founded by the Allied armies. Members of the unit, among them Capt. Gilroy, recorded the invasion of Sicily, the D-Day landings, the liberation of Paris, and the Elbe River link-up of the Allied armies, known as 'Elbe Day', among other campaigns. Captain Gilroy was born in Wellington, Ontario, and grew up in Petrolia. Examples of his wartime photographs are in the Library and Archives Canada collection.
