Label TextThe Metropolitan Store began in 1907 as Brewster's. Founder F. H. Brewster had learned how to run such a business as the manager of the S. H. Knox outlet. Brewster's first two stores didn't last. In 1907, the collapse of Reid's Crystal Hall destroyed the first store before it even opened. The second was destroyed in the 1911 Dundas Street fire. By 1912, Brewster's reopened. In 1920, Brewster's, by this time a chain of 11 stores, was renamed Metropolitan. By the time this handbill was printed, the chain had grown to some 60 stores nation-wide. The business operated at its Dundas Street location until 1984.
