Label TextLondoner Millicent Giddens bequeathed her extensive glass collection to the museum after her passing in 1941. Since 1905, Giddens and a group of friends known as "The Antiquarians" collected curios from vintage shops around the London area. Coloured glass is a popular collector's item, and Giddens' donation has a wide range of coloured pieces. Cranberry glass or 'Gold Ruby' glass is a red or pink glass that is made by adding gold salts or colloidal gold to molten glass. The lighter the colour, the less gold compound was used. Unlike pressed glass, cranberry glass is not typically mass-produced due to the high cost of gold needed to make its distinct colour. The pieces in this collection were likely hand-blown and moulded in small batches.
