Label TextThis button highlights the rights of non-smokers to a smoke-free environment. From the late 1970s, people voiced concerns about the dangers of second-hand smoke. Workplaces and businesses began to ban smoking. Progress was slow until Heather Crowe was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002. A non-smoker, she had worked for 40 years in smoke-filled restaurants. Crowe’s activism ensured that Canadian public places and workplaces are now smoke-free.
