Label TextJohn Labatt II (1838-1915) introduced India Pale Ale in 1867. He had learned the recipe during his apprenticeship in Wheeling, West Virginia. It became a popular addition to the brewery’s product line. Following J. K. Labatt’s 1866 death, John Labatt took over, operating the brewery with his mother, Eliza (1816-1897). In 1872, Labatt bought her share to become sole owner.
