Label TextThe London Crockery Manufacturing Company produced this cocoa pot around 1890. Its design reflects Dutch chemist Coenraad Van Houten’s (1801-1887) 1828 improvement of cocoa powder. He added alkaline salts to the powder to reduce bitterness. This addition also made cocoa easier to mix. Before this innovation, cocoa pots had hinged finials on the lid so that a stirrer could be inserted. The finial is fixed on this lid. With improved cocoa powder, the stirrer became obsolete.
