Label TextWilliam C. Heine (1919-1991) was a Canadian writer and the editor-in-chief of the London Free Press for 18 years after working for the paper since 1949. An avid traveler and member of the International Press Institute, he wrote about the Arctic, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. His estate donated a collection of glassware, including these drinking glasses. Coloured glass is a popular collector's item, with cranberry glass among the most coveted. Cranberry glass or 'Gold Ruby' glass is a red or pink glass that is made by adding gold salts or colloidal gold to molten glass. The lighter the colour, the less gold compound was used. Unlike pressed glass, cranberry glass is not typically mass-produced due to the high cost of gold needed to make its distinct colour. The pieces in this collection were likely hand-blown and moulded in small batches.
