A retailer and wholesaler, Hobbs sold and distributed a dizzying array of products including tools, dairying equipment, housewares, paints and stains, sporting gear, and much more. The company name appeared on many of the products he sold.
In the 1880s, recognizing a growing demand for building materials, Hobbs launched the Hobbs Manufacturing Company to produce mirrors and distribute glass for a range of purposes. He also opened Western Wire and Nail to manufacture nails and nuts and bolts.
Western Wire and Nail closed in the late 1940s. Hobbs Hardware and the Hobbs Manufacturing Company continued into the late 20th century.
