Label TextCustomers of Lem Wong’s Café, opened in 1914, dined off this plate. Wong (1881-1976) had immigrated from China in 1897, paying the $50 head tax to come to Canada. Anti-Chinese hostility on Canada’s west coast drove him out. After travelling across Canada, working in laundries to survive, Wong settled in London in 1903. Outgoing and generous, Wong became a fixture in the community.
