Label TextThe Society for the Protection of Animals and Children (later the Children's Aid Society) placed this horse trough on King Street at the market in the 1890s because of the large number of horses present on the market square. Horses needed regular watering since they can drink between 25 and 55 litres of water a day. The trough remained at its original location until the market building was demolished in 1955. It reappeared at the Storybook Gardens farm site in the 1980s. In 1988, it was installed at the Dundas Street entrance to Market Lane where it remained for several years before its removal to the city works yard and then to Museum London.
