Label TextThis ration book belonged to Londoner Emma Simms (1882-1968). The Canadian government instituted rationing in 1942. It wanted to ensure enough supplies for both civilian and military use. In addition to food stuffs such as meat, sugar, tea, coffee, and butter, the government also rationed gasoline and alcohol. For most civilians, rationing was a nuisance rather than a hardship.
