Label TextThis stereograph shows what Market Square looked like in 1915. Stereographs are cards with two-nearly identical, side-by-side images on them. They are used with a stereoscope, which is an optical tool that presents two slightly different images, one to each eye, to produce the effect of depth and three-dimensionality. These instruments allowed people to view cards with drawings or photographs of faraway places, landmarks, as well as scenes of everyday life. The cards were a popular souvenir to bring back from travels so scenes could be shared and viewed, long after the trip.
