Label TextLondon’s W. A. Jenkins Manufacturing Company, located at Ridout and King streets, sold calf meal, among many other products, under the Royal Purple brand name. William Alexander Hunt Jenkins (1874-1949) established the business in 1906. It endured into the late 20th century. The calf meal was sold in a burlap sack. Burlap is made from the fibres of the jute plant. The English first began to import jute from India in the 1700s. The Scottish discovered how to spin and weave it into a fabric in the 1830s. Burlap is strong, durable, versatile, and resistant to heat and damp.
