Label TextAlthough some skilled quilt makers did free-hand quilting, many relied on templates to mark the pattern. To use a pierced template, they sprinkled water soluble powder onto it, which left guidelines on the fabric below. In the case of solid stencils, some quilt makers used a tracing wheel like the one here, combined with carbon paper, to leave guiding marks on the fabric.
