Carriages like this transported fire hoses to emergency sites before the use of fire trucks. In addition to the hose reel, this carriage also has a footboard on the back where a firefighter stood while enroute to the site of a fire. London’s fire department obtained its first 1,000 feet of leather hose in 1852 as well as a two-wheeled cart to carry it. In 1870, the department purchased an additional 800 feet of leather hose, and then, in 1872, a further 1000 feet of canvas hose.
