Label TextOral retractors are tools used to hold the mouth open. In medicine, they were originally used for procedures and surgeries in the mouth and throat, or for opening the mouths of patients who are unable to do so themselves. These tools also keep the airway open and accessible during anesthesia since the mouth and throat muscles relax and can block the lungs. Today, it is more common for oral airways and endotracheal tubes to be used when patients are under anesthesia.
