Richard Cornelius began his business from his basement in 1931. In 1933, he introduced the first diaphragm type compressor for the beer industry, which was a major breakthrough in drinks dispensing technology. After work in the military industry during the Second World War, Cornelius returned to the drinks dispensing industry in 1945, the year in which he improved and adapted his system for soft drinks. The Cornelius company continued to develop drinks dispensing technology after this.
