Label TextBy the late 1940s, traffic congestion plagued the downtown core. In response, the city installed the first parking meters in 1948. Although these meters ended up in the Thames River, city workers soon replaced them. As well, no parking signs appeared and the bylaw officers needed to enforce the parking restrictions. Today, with some 273,000 cars in the city, parking is still a hot topic.
