Object number2007.017.001
Label TextThis water heater was removed from the Clarendon Hotel, which once stood at the northwest corner of Talbot and King streets. Crane, a sanitary ware manufacturer, was established in Winnipeg in 1906. The company moved its head office to Montreal in 1921 and developed a series of wholesale branches across the country. One of the branches opened at 304 York Street in London where it remained into the 1970s. Their initial products were restricted to brass works, however in 1902, the company acquired a pottery and began to manufacture their own bathroom fixtures. A plant was built in Stratford in 1961 following a fire in the Quebec metal plant. The water heater evolved from a tank usually mounted on or near the kitchen stove before 1900 into a standalone tank usually connected to a gas or electric heater.
