Label TextMuseum London employee, Cydna Mercer, received this greeting card in January 2021. It is an example of the humour that some found in the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and restrictions on everyday activities. It is also an example of the ways in which people stayed connected and “together apart” as they navigated unknown and often frightening situations. As for the word “quarantini,” it first appeared in a 2005 episode of the television show, “Scrubs.” Character Danni Sullivan asked 'Quarantinis anyone?' when a potential SARS threat forced a lockdown of the intensive care unit. In its first pre-pandemic iteration, a quarantini was a health drink disguised as a cocktail. It often featured vitamin C powder, which gave the beverage an unnatural orange hue. During the Covid-19 pandemic, people made quarantinis out of whatever was on hand in their homes since officials frowned on non-essential shopping. Some common ingredients included citrus fruits and honey for health benefits.
