From 1855 until 1871, Boyle had served as the principal of London’s Union School. Then, until his death in 1891, Boyle was London’s first public school inspector. Writing about Boyle in 1910, author J. George Hodgins concluded that “Mr. Boyle was one of the ablest all-round Teachers and Inspectors that ever served in the province, and to him the citizens of London owe a debt of gratitude for the broad and deep foundation of our Public Schools of today.”
