Label TextOn April 12, 1870, Captain John Peters (1833-1915) helped command the London Field Battery. Their mission? To repel the Fenians, expected to attempt a raid of Canada via Sarnia. Peters and his unit did not encounter the enemy that day. Nor did they on May 26, 1870, when they were ordered back to Sarnia. Between 1866 and 1871, the American-based Fenian Brotherhood tried to capture Canada. They hoped to secure Ireland’s independence from Britain. Composed of Irish-American Civil War veterans, the Fenians defeated a small Canadian force at the Battle of Ridgeway in June 1866. Their other raids failed.
