Label TextThis pewter teapot belonged to Mrs. Bertie Ben Zavitz who lived in Lobo Twp. She was of the same Zavitz family as the donor's mother, "Mary Bycraft".
Benjamin, (known as Bertie Ben because of other Benjamins in the Zavitz family) and his wife Marion (known as Merrin) had come to Lobo in 1848, following Merrin’s father Benjamin Cutler and family who came in 1838. Benjamin and Merrin owned 100 acres, Lot 8, concession 10, Lobo.
Benjamin F. Zavitz, (Bertie Ben) brother of George O., married Marion Cutler, daughter of Benjamin on July 13, 1838. They farmed in Bertie for about 10 years. During that time three children were born, David in 1840, Sarah in 1843 who died the next year, and Eliza Jean, born in 1845. In 1848 they moved to Lobo to the south-east half of Lot 8 Con. 10 which they bought from John Smith for 175 pounds. Samuel and Mary Doyle, the original owners had obtained the Crown deed about 20 years previously.There was a frame house on the property in which the Zavitz family lived for about 17 years. Another son, Hugh Kester Zavitz, was born in 1852.
