Zavitz had brought an apple paring machine with him from Welland County when he and his wife, Anna Hampton Zavitz, moved to their home in Coldstream. The paring machine did not have an attached knife as later models did. Zavitz, the history reports, was adept at holding the knife in proper position as the apple was turned on its spindle.
