Label TextThe maker of this four-patch quilt, possibly Katie Westman, used different techniques to create the finished article. She pieced the top of the quilt by hand, combining colours to create a striping effect. She then appliquéd the border using a sewing machine. Either alone or with help, she quilted the three layers together. Each four-patch square is quilted with an “X” and each white square is quilted in a flower pattern. The appliqué border features two rows of quilting that echoes the scalloped shape of the border.
This quilt includes three squares in the hexagon star pattern. Although they seem to be pieced from different fabrics, they were instead printed to look that way. Cacheco (or Cocheco) Mills in Pennsylvania produced this printed patchwork, sometimes called “cheater” fabric, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
