Label TextA Lambeth-area blacksmith made the cowbell in the early 1800s. At that time, farmers kept cattle to meet local needs for dairy products and beef. In the late 1850s, more farmers took up livestock production. Soil exhaustion and insect pests made it harder to grow wheat. The American Civil War (1861-1865) also created a new market for beef.
