Label TextElizabeth Alsop made this sampler in 1850. The format as well as the use of a single thread colour and recycled exercise paper binding suggests that Alsop probably made it as a schoolroom exercise while she attended school near East Finchley in London, England. The sampler is typical of the "school style," a format common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. These samplers include a variety of alphabets, numerals, and improving or informative inscriptions. The verse embroidered on this sampler stresses obedience to one's parents and the fear of God, sentiments commonly expressed at a time when parents, and in particular the father, held great authority over the family and household.
