Label TextSamplers are single pieces of fabric, typically linen or cotton, on which stitching, and embroidery techniques are practiced. Creating samplers was a common way to practice the alphabet, learn basic numbers, and express creativity. Popular motifs on historical samplers include decorative borders, repeating patterns, flowers, animals, and religious iconography. It was also common for the stitcher to embroider their name and the date of completion somewhere on the sampler. This sampler was created by Lizzie Smibert in March, 1876.
