Label TextSamplers are single pieces of fabric, typically linen or cotton, on which stitching, and embroidery techniques are practiced. Popular motifs on historical samplers include decorative borders, repeating patterns, flowers, animals, and religious iconography. This sampler has a central "tree of life", with a serpent winding around its trunk and figures of Adam and Eve on either side. This sampler was given to Clara Brenton in 1932 when on a visit to Jersey, British Isles, her mother's birthplace. The sampler was made by an ancestor of Brenton, Elizabeth Palot. Palot was 12 years old when she made it in 1811.
