Label TextHenrietta "Hattie" Charlton made this sampler in 1859. Born between 1845-1847, she was 12 or 14 at the time. Samplers are single pieces of fabric, typically linen or cotton, on which young girls practiced stitching and embroidery techniques. They were a popular tool for girls to practice the alphabet, learn basic numbers, and express their creativity. Popular motifs on historical samplers include decorative borders, repeating patterns, flowers, animals, and religious iconography. As young Hattie did, stitchers also commonly embroidered their name and the date of completion of their work somewhere on the sampler.
