Label TextIsaac Treharne (1853-1927) was an Ontario-born farmer of Welsh extraction. This certificate was awarded to him upon completion of schooling. S S No 1. was the first school in the Welsh settlement of London Township and opened in 1853. It was located on the south-east corner of the 15th concession road and Denfield Side Road. It stands for School Section number 1 and means this school served the first school section in London Township. Rural areas were divided in sections that were about 8km by 8km. A three-person board of trustees managed each school. Anyone who lived within that area attended the school and the families paid taxes to operate it.
