Label TextThis is a cast iron Kenrick & Co. goffering iron. Consisting of metal tube mounted on a stand, it also had an inner bar. This bar would be removed and then heated typically over a fire, and then the rod would be reinserted, heating the tube. That heated was then used to iron the fabrics into a scalloped edge. Goffering irons were introduced in the 16th century and continued to be used to the end of the Victorian period to create the ruffles that were still desired in both women’s and men’s fashion. Many Victorians added ruffles to their clothing to make it more elaborate. Babies' clothing also normally featured ruffles.
