Label TextMr. George O. Zavitz, who lived in Lobo Township, Middlesex County, owned these ice skates. A regular winter pastime in northern Europe, ice skating became popular in North America in the 1850s-1860s. These ice skates would have been screwed onto the bottoms of shoes or boots with holes drilled into the sole. It was not until later that ice skates with pre-attached boots became common.
