Label TextAfter a number of years testing the viability of sugar beet farming in Ontario in the 1890s, Ontario farmers began to cultivate the crop in 1902. From 1916, farmers were able to deliver their sugar beets to the Redpath refineries in Chatham and Wallaceburg, Ontario. In 1967 and 1968, Tate & Lile bought the Wallaceburg and Chatham plants from Redpath and closed their operations. This domestic sugar industry provided employment to Ontarians and lower prices for consumers. Today, approximately one-quarter of the world’s sugar production comes from beets. And today, Ontario and Alberta are Canada's major beet manufacturers.
