Label TextThe Middlesex County Courthouse can be seen from this image taken from aboard a vessel in the Thames River. The first passenger vessel was launched on the Thames River in 1878. Steamboats operated on the river, running regular trips through the summer between Downtown London and Byron. One of the vessels was the S.S. Forest City, which can be seen here in the background. It was launched in July 1878, becoming one of the first boats to operate on the Thames under the Thames Navigation Company. The sinking of the S.S. Victoria in 1881 cost the lives of nearly 200 passengers. Following the disaster, Londoners were reluctant to support the riverboat system, and trips fully stopped in 1899.
