Label TextAfter the S.S. Victoria disaster in 1881, in which nearly 200 passengers lost their lives, the riverboat system suffered a decline in popularity. In May 1888, Captain David Foster launched two new steamboats - the S.S. City of London, pictured here, and the S.S. Thames. The S.S. City of London would become one of the first vessels to become decommissioned due to lack of demand, in 1894. Never fully recovering in public opinion after the S.S. Victoria sinking, riverboat rides on the Thames River ceased in 1899.
