Label TextThis baptismal gown was worn by a member of the Robins family, likely around 1890. Christening gowns are worn by the infant or child at the time of their baptism. The gowns are long and white, usually made of linen or cotton, and sometimes decorated with lace and embroidery. The gowns are a symbol of purity and according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The white garment symbolizes that the person baptised has 'put on Christ', has risen with Christ.”
