Label TextMade by a local furniture maker, Jefferies, this chair echoes Elizabethan and Jacobean forms with adaptations interjected by the regional taste. The Elizabethan and Jacobean styles were characterized by rectangular shapes and spool turnings.
Lawrence Lawrason (1803-1882) loaned this armchair to London’s Tecumseh House Hotel in September 1860. The proprietors of the newly-built facility had put out an urgent call to the city’s leading citizens. They needed furnishings for the ball to honor Prince Albert Edward, later King Edward VII (1841-1910). Later, Lawrason left the armchair to his daughter, Louisa Lawrason Ridout (1828-1896). At one time, it bore a label indicating that another Londoner, Jefferies, had made it.
