Label TextLondon East’s Atlantic Petroleum, pictured here in 1875, used oak barrels to transport its products. This refinery was established in 1866 by Herman and Isaac Waterman, when the oil business was at its height in London. Its operations covered four acres on Hamilton Road. In the late 19th century, London East was home to several different petroleum refineries. Some included cooperages while others purchased barrels from local barrel-makers. When the oil boom ended, only a few refineries remained in London. Industries that supplied it, including cooperages, suffered.
