Label TextEnglish-born cabinetmaker Henry Coombs (1819-1882) made this cabinet and gave it to his sister, Martha, on her 1854 marriage to Oliver McClary. From this couple it passed to their eldest daughter, Louisa, who married John MacKenzie Moore. It then passed to their eldest son, John McClary Moore and then to his eldest son, John Henderson Moore. Their ancestor, Henry Coombs had learned his skills during a five-year-long apprenticeship that began in 1835. Immigrating to London in 1843, Coombs soon opened a cabinet-making business on the northwest corner of London’s King and Richmond streets. In 1875, he announced he was closing the business. The notice highlighted the medals Coombs’ furniture had won locally and in Paris, France. It also noted that customers could be confident of the quality of his goods for while other manufacturers had adopted machinery, Coombs still trusted the skill of trained craftsmen.
