Brown Dress and Jacket

Date1880s
Credit LineGift of Mrs. G. A. MacLachlan, London, Ontario, 1974

Label TextThis dress belonged to Miss Louise Racek, born in 1851 in Germany. She owned a "fancy work" store on Simcoe Street and it is probable that she made this dress. The 1870s-1880s featured distinctly popular silhouettes in women’s fashion. Cuirass bodices that extended over the hips were used to create a slim line. These bodices, that frequently had long, tight-fitting sleeves, were paired with skirts with generous gathering, pleating, and full bustles at the back.
