Label TextThis intricately carved fire screen is attributed to Grinling Gibbons (1648-1720), English carver and sculptor. Born in Rotterdam of Dutch parentage, he practiced his art in England. John Evelyn, struck by his 1671 carving of Tintoretto's Crucifixion, obtained the patronage of Sir Christopher Wren for Gibbons, who continued to practice his craft. He is best known for his work in England, including at Windsor Castle, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace, St Paul's Cathedral and other London churches, Petworth House and other country houses, Trinity College, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge.
