Label TextGreg Curnoe (1936-1992) made this paint-spattered wooden easel in manual training class at the H. B. Beal Technical and Commercial High School around 1954. One of the wooden pegs on the front is missing, and was replaced, likely by Curnoe, with a red pencil. The dried paint, worn legs, and missing pieces suggest this was a well-used tool throughout Curnoe's career.
Curnoe was one of the leaders of the art movement known as "London Regionalism," which developed through the 1950s-1960s and included artists Jack Chambers, Tony Urquhart, Murray Favro, and others. He is known for colourful works that incorporate text, painting, and sculpture and centre around themes of Canadian identity, politics, and popular culture.
