Label TextAn artist's tool kit and studio often contains remnants and pieces of art-making itself. Misplaced supplies, spilled paint, and notes are commonly found. This is Nellie Curnoe's paint box, made by Gordon Curnoe, her husband, and father to Greg (1936-1992), Glen, and Lynda. This case has evidence of Nellie's use, with bright orange markings on the inside lid, and oil paint stains over the entire surface.
One of her sons, Greg Curnoe, was one of the leaders of the art movement known as "London Regionalism," which developed through the 1950s-1960s and included artists Jack Chambers, Tony Urquhart, Murray Favro, and others. He is known for colourful works that incorporate text, painting, and sculpture and centre around themes of Canadian identity, politics, and popular culture.
