Label TextWilliam Gorman and D. J. Dyson founded the Forest City Spice Mills in 1883, locating it in a building on Talbot Street. It first packaged coffee but added spices, baking powder, and flavouring extracts to its product line in 1885. In 1890, D. J. Dyson left the business and R. C. Eckert joined it. Renamed the Gorman, Eckert & Company, it continued to package and sell coffee, spices, and flavouring extracts. By 1900, the company had added ketchup, salad dressings, and mustard. With sales high and the business growing, the company erected a new building on Clarence Street.
