Label TextPeter Strathopolous (1916-2010) used this shoeshine chair as part of his shoemaking and shoe repair business located at 400 Richmond Street. Strathopolous had been in business for around 40 years when he retired in 1974. By that date, chairs like this had begun to disappear from businesses and streets. Many people chose to replace shoes rather than spend money on their care. As well, more casual work dress meant fewer people wore shoes needing polish. That trend is beginning to reverse itself today.
