Daniel Simmons Perrin (1833-1908) started a small confectionary and biscuit store on Horton Street in 1863, featuring handmade products such as stick candy, gingersnaps, and soda crackers. The D. S. Perrin Company thrived, eventually growing into both a national and international manufacturer of candy and biscuits, which at its peak employed 500 people. It survived long after Mr. Perrin's death in 1908, eventually becoming the Canada Biscuit Company when it amalgamated with its local rival, the McCormick Company, in 1927.
